In 1945, survivors of the Buchenwald concentration camp fled Europe for the land of Israel, seeking new life in their ancestral homeland. Upon their arrival to Mandatory Palestine, then controlled by the British, the survivors faced arrest. Aboard their ship called the “Unafraid,” the passengers can be seen coming out of hiding, raising the Israeli flag, and singing stanzas from Tikvateinu, “Our Hope,” a poem by Naftali Hera Imber.
